Who is your Unsung Hero?
By Steve Carter
Back in November I was at the BOSS awards which, for anybody that has not been, is always a good night. The award that always gives the heart strings a bit of a tug is the one presented to the Unsung Hero’s and those recipients are always deserving winners. These are often people whose daily endeavours make a business tick, but can sometimes go unnoticed.
While watching, it was also a time for reflection for me. Only the previous week, I had a couple of trips to our local and on both occasions the same young lady behind the bar did something that really impressed me. The first occasion was on a family visit and when I went to pay the tab, I gave her a few quid as a tip. Before I could say anything else, I saw her deposit some of it into the charity box on the bar. I politely pointed out that it was meant for her, and she replied, ‘I know, I will put some in here and the rest in the staff tip box.’ Wow, what a wonderful thing to do.
A few days later, I was having a few beers with a mate on a very busy night. There happened to be a slight lull at the bar, part way through the evening. The same young lady was working the bar and walked over to where we were sat. ‘Steve, it has gone a bit quiet for a moment, shall I pour you two another beer and bring it over?’ She enquired. Moments before she was rushed off her feet so should have taken a breather, but she didn’t. Except for my friend and I, her kindness went unnoticed, for the second time that week.
I also remember managing the operations team when I was working for a dealer. You try changing drivers to different routes and see what uproar you get from customers who had got very used to what they would describe as ‘our driver.’ Drivers touch the customer far more frequently than anybody else and will go way above and beyond the call of duty, but they hardly ever come back and tell you what they have done and how important they have made the customer feel.
These guys don’t tend to win prizes at big awards nights, but they do deserve the same sort of recognition, which is why it is great to see businesses honouring their unsung hero’s on LinkedIn, with employee of the month awards.
We all have unsung heroes in our businesses, go on, make them feel special. The landlord of our local now knows he has one.
